Day by day program

Day 1. Badolato

We arrive in Badolato in the early afternoon where  we start a walking tour of  the historic center of this charming medieval village characterized by the presence of twelve old churches, some of them dates back to the X – XI century. The origins of Badolato are traced back to Roberto  il Guiscardo, Duke of Calabria, who, in 1080 decided to build “a peaceful village”. It has been recognized among the “healthy Italian villages” thanks to the genuine local food and the still alive farmer’s way of life. After a very interesting guided visit we start to get know the gastronomic tradition of this area thanks to a delicious dinner in a typical “Catojo” ( old cellar). After dinner we depart for Guardavalle where our charming rural house welcomes us.

Day 2: Wine Trekking in Bivongi  – The Byzantine Stilaro Valley

After a genuine breakfast, we leave for Bivongi. Our trekking starts from a vineyard which produces Bivongi DOC. This wine is obtained with black grapes from native vines only that is to say gaglioppo, black greek, black calabrese grapes. It is also produced in the White and Rosé types. We continue walking through the vineyards while hearing about the origins of the cultivation of vines in Calabria which dates back to the Magna Grecia period. The Greeks identified many areas dedicated to vines on the coasts of  Calabria which once was  known as Enotria, that is the land of wine. During our slow trekking we stop for a visit to the monastery  of San Giovanni Theristis  where a few Romanian monks still celebrate the Greek-Orthodox rite. After this regenerating experince  we relax tasting  an excellent Bivongi DOC wine accompanied by local genuine products. We pass through Byzantine Stilaro Valley to Stilo to visit the “Cattolica” a small church which is considered one of the most important  example of Byzantine architecture. Back to Badolato we stop in a charming ancient rural villa. Here we experince a homemade fresh-pasta workshop which we enjoy for dinner.

Day 3.  Olive Harvest experience in Badolato

Today we experience one of the most traditional farmer’s activity in southern Italy. We start with the visit of the farm surrounded by olive groves  where you have a general introduction to the world of extra virgin olive oil and to the harvesting techniques. The olive picking is done by hand or through mechanical means which do not damage the olives. After enjoing this convivial activity we visit a local oil-press where you see  the process to squeeze the olives and  the extra virgin olive oil. Our harvesting experience will conclude with an open-air lunch ( if weather permits ) based on genuine farmer’s meal accompanied with a delicious local red wine.
